Program Details

At Southwest Christian Care, our mission is to glorify God by honoring the sanctity and dignity of life. We strive to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to our patients and their families, offering hope rooted in faith in Jesus Christ as Lord of life and death.

The hospice care we provide extends beyond the patient to include vital support for their families, both before and after the loss of a loved one. Southwest Christian Care offers support in the following ways:

Emotional Support: Our nurses and social workers stay in touch with family members as needed, providing emotional care through personal contacts and written materials designed to help them cope with grief and loss.

Chaplains: Experienced Chaplains visit patients regularly and are available to provide support whenever special needs arise. We honor and respect the beliefs of every patient and family member, regardless of their faith or spiritual background.

Bereavement Visits: Family members are offered calls or visits following the loss of their loved one to ensure they feel supported during their time of grief.

Bereavement Correspondence: Families receive encouraging correspondence during the first year after their loss. These materials are designed to help individuals navigate grief and the mourning process.

Short-Term Bereavement Counseling: We offer short-term counseling to assist families and individuals with issues related to grief, loss, trauma, family stress, and other life challenges. This service is provided at no cost and is available by appointment.

Grief Support Groups: These support groups provide a safe and affirming space for individuals to connect with others experiencing similar grief and loss. Open to the entire community, these groups are available at no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our Spiritual Care FAQ section, where we address common questions about our compassionate services, support options, and care approaches.

What does the chaplain do if I have a minister or pastor who visits me?

The chaplain visit is supplemental. The chaplain is here to help you process what is going on in your life today. Your minister’s purpose may be to help you hold onto your faith as he/she defines it. It is important to have a non-biased person listening to your doubts, fears and even distress to what is going on in your life. That is what the chaplain visit offers you. A hearing with no judgment on what you are feeling and experiencing in your life with whatever diagnosis you are facing.

Is God punishing me with this disease?

We are not here to determine or judge what God is doing, we are here to affirm you and your life. God loves you and gives all of us value. This is not a time of judgment but a time to try to finish the business of loving. And we are here to help your family with their needs, too.

How can I make sure my family will be okay with me being in hospice?

The chaplain is here to support you and your family, spiritually and emotionally. We help affirm feelings and thoughts, as well as facilitate any necessary family conversations. If amends are needed, we offer the time and a safe space for that to occur. We know there may be estranged family members or other family dynamics, and we will support you in your decision to be in hospice.

What good comes from meeting with other people while grieving?

Grief is a very hard thing to endure. Talking to others about it may be very challenging, but it is very important to work through the grief process. It starts out painful, but the process can be rewarding and give more meaning, purpose, and depth to your life. Your loved one’s passing is an important event in your life. We are here to encourage you to talk, write, or perhaps even draw what your personal grief process means to you.
