Richard Waits Retires After 33 Years of Service to Southwest Christian Care

Richard Waits with Mike Sorrow, Director

Richard Waits has given 33 years of service to Southwest Christian Care.  His service began when he served on the board of Southwest Christian Church, our founding congregation. Richard has now retired from his regular volunteer service and was honored at our ministry center on Sept 27, 2016 when family, friends and staff gathered to express their deep appreciaton.

For the past 29 years he has been a weekly volunteer, serving every Tuesday, doing everything from answering the phone to handyman projects.

Richard’s first wife Jackie was cared for in the hospice and after her death, Richard continued his volunteer work.  He is now married to Joan Waits, another long-term volunteer.

In this short video, Richard reflects on his time as a volunteer.

Upscale Resale Shoppes - Blessings

You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure, for God loves a person who gives cheerfully.

New Living Translation

Our Upscale Resale Shops in McDonough and in Newnan sell high quality, gently used merchandise.  The proceeds benefit our ministry.  But sometimes the stores are more than a source of merchandise to those who come our way, and sometimes our customers bring blessings to us.

Erin Copp, manager of our Newnan store, shares this story about a recent visitor and a moment of generosity and blessing.

WeCare Saturday Respite

On the second Saturday of every month, Southwest Christian Care offers WeCare Saturday Respite, an 8-hour time for non-medically fragile special needs children to enjoy activities geared for their needs, while their parents and families enjoy a break.

April is National Autism Awareness Month and some of our WeCare kids are affected by autism.  Here's an audio story that focuses on this as well as highlighting the work of some of our volunteers who work with this program.

In Loving Memory: John Sidey

John Sidey visiting with hospice patient

We say goodbye and remember our treasured chaplain, Mr. John Sidey. On Tuesday, April 5, John spent his regular volunteer day at our Hospice, where he visited and prayed with our patients and their families.  He also visited, laughed and shared with our staff and volunteers – it was a day we will all treasure.

On Wednesday, April 6, we learned that John had gone to be with the Lord.  It was evident to everyone that knew him that John loved people and had the most infectious smile, sweetest prayers and a genuine love in sharing the love of Jesus Christ as he visited with our patients and their families.  Our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers are grateful for the 16 years John served at Southwest Christian Care.  Our prayers to his family as we remember our very special friend and chaplain, John Sidey!  We love and miss you, John!

We Need You!

Here's a telephone chat with our volunteer coordinator Shelley Mann. We might have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!  Listen and find out more.  It runs 3:39.

Volunteers are essential to the ministry of Southwest Christian Care.  In spite of struggling with MS and recovering from a stroke, Mary Wetzl generously gives of her time and loving heart to the DayBreak Program for Seniors and to the children of Hope House Children's Respite.  Listen as she tells her story.

Southwest Christian Care Dedicates Byron & Jim’s Place

Thursday afternoon, September 17th marked another huge milestone in the history of Southwest Christian Care as a new facility, named Byron & Jim’s Place was officially dedicated.  The building will house the ministry’s DayBreak program for seniors and Hope Suites which will serve families whose loved ones are residents of the hospice ministry.  If the families of hospice patients live far away, or if their loved one’s death is deemed imminent, the suites will afford them places to stay close by and at no charge.

The late Truett S. Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, served as honorary chairman of Southwest Christian Care’s “Founders’ Legacy” Campaign, which honored the memory of ministry founders Byron F. Harper, Jr. and James W. Dyer, Jr. by raising the $1.4 million to build Byron & Jim’s Place debt-free.

Byron & Jim’s Place will also include a new gift shop named Mary Ruth’s Corner, in memory of longtime volunteer Mary Ruth Kimsey.  A special “Christmas Shop” will be open November 9 through December 18, 2015.  Christmas décor donations are needed!  Donations are being received at the main campus: 7225 Lester Road, Union City, GA.

All Southwest Christian Care services - hospice, children’s respite and senior services - are provided at no cost to patients or their families.  We depend solely on the free-will gifts from the community to operate.  Churches are encouraged to “join hands” with the ministry by financially supporting the Southwest Christian Care ministries as part of their local mission outreach.

Upscale Resale Volunteers Gail & Kevin Wilson

Our Upscale Resale Shoppes in McDonough and in Newnan help provide financial support for all of the ministries of Southwest Christian Care.  But Upscale Resale is more than a bargain store, it's a ministry to the community and to the people who shop there.  As volunteer Gail Wilson explains, "sometimes people come in wanting prayer or just a friend, so we listen."

Gail and her son Kevin have been volunteers since Upscale Resale opened in 2009.  As a special needs person, Kevin brings a very special presence of service and caring to the store.

Here is their story.
